Production orders and their role in cost accounting
Production orders arethe foundation upon which the industrial costing system is built, and are sometimes called work orders.
Production orders are allocated as follows:
- Production order for each unit of product... such as production orders for the automotive industry and all means of transportation.
- A production order for a number of production units... This is done for small, similar products that rely on standard costing, such as preserved foods.
A production order for a specific volume of production. This is done in products that depend on volume or weight, such as chemical industries.
- A production order for each client... like the furniture industry.
- A production order for a specific period of time, such as orders for internal use and maintenance work.
There are many types of production orders (work orders) used depending on the nature of the industry and the product, noting that
There may be work orders related to initial production stages for manufacturing components that go into the final product.
The work order is opened by the planning department and a copy of the form is sent to:
- Financial Management: For Monitoring and Control
- Production management... to begin the production process
- Warehouse management... to determine the work order number on disbursement requests and item cards
- Quality management... to monitor quality at every stage
**And at the end of the work process, the same previous departments are notified
The following must be stated in the work order form:
- Start date
- Closing date
- Job order statement
- Customer name... if available
- The stages it will go through
- Quantity required
- Product specifications
